Winter Meeting, Feb. 19th , 2010

Our winter meeting, led by Garden Coordinator Wendy Anderson, was held on the 19th of February at the Foodbank.

Our main topic of discussion was the application for a new lease. Our lease is up on June 18th, 2010. Dick Farris who manages AFCSR, the nonprofit entity that holds the lease to the garden, has written the Borough to ask for a new lease. With high demand for community gardens and strong support from most neighbors, we see no reason why the Fairbanks North Star Borough assembly would reject a resolution for a new lease. But, two neighbors of the garden succeeded in having traditional access to the garden blocked last year. We are unsure what influence they might have on the approval of the new lease. It was decided to make sure we have many supporters contact the Borough Mayor and assembly to voice support over this use of Borough land.

It was decided to leave the fees at the same level as last year (at $35.00 rent and $40.00 deposit) unless we need to raise them to cover insurance costs. We will try to have an estimate on those costs by the time the new contracts go out.

Clean-up Day will be June 12, 2010, 1-5 PM. Jim Blizzard will spearhead this project.

Concerns about invasive weeds were discussed. It was suggested that we include a link to the Cooperative extension's information web site on invasive weed eradication. Delia will provide us with that link.

Since many new organic herbicides have been developed since our handbook was written, we decided to add the word "non organic" under the General Information, Chemicals portion of our handbook.

Rules governing unworked plots were also discussed and consensus was reach. Those rules are now included in the online handbook.
